A ‘rock-ship’ is a nickname for a short-distance craft used for travel within a single star system, primarily between asteroids (“rocks”). Rebels, rogues, and pirates typically pilot them. The NCS relentlessly pursues, captures, and detains them on sight. Those who use them are referred to as ‘rock-hoppers’.

This particular “liftoff” refers to the initial departure of humans from Earth to the region of Nu Centauri. They were eager and excited for the new adventure. If they had known what waited for them there, they would have selected a different destination…
